The kind of subsidies that a state will offer for making of EVs will be one of the criteria for Mahindra to make the decision of setting up of EV building infrastructure.

Mahindra, a domestic manufacturer, has started discussions with a number of state governments about establishing an electric vehicle production facility for its next line of electric vehicles, which it unveiled on the occasion of the 75th Independence Day. The first four of the automaker’s five electric SUVs are scheduled to go on sale between December 2024 and 2026. Before choosing a location and a production plan for these EVs, the company will weigh the incentives provided by various state governments.

The type of subsidies that a state will provide for the manufacture of EVs will be one of the elements used to decide whether or not to establish EV construction infrastructure in that state. Therefore, before finalising our manufacturing strategy, we are waiting to complete that process and would keep two to three choices open, the company’s Executive Director for the Auto and Farm Sectors, Rajesh Jejurikar, said PTI.

The company manufactures cars with internal combustion engines at facilities spread across several states, including Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. The company is considering producing electric vehicles at its current passenger vehicle manufacturing facilities or looking for a new facility to produce electric SUVs. “We are open to various possibilities. Although I don’t believe it will be the only factor, Jejurikar said it is unquestionably one when choosing where to manufacture.

He added that the company would prefer a state which already has a ready automotive manufacturing infrastructure. “It has to be in an automotive hub. So, we are obviously not going to go to a state where there is no automotive ecosystem. We have enough states now with such ecosystems which are focussing on attracting EV investments,” he added.

Mahindra plans to manufacture its five electric SUVs under two brands – XUV and the all-new electric-only brand, called BE.
