Man who Stole more than 5000 Cars, arrested in Delhi

Anil Chauhan has been stealing vehicles since 1997 and while he has been arrested in the past, has continued with his nefarious ways.

Anil Chauhan, accused of stealing and masterminding the theft of at least 5,000 vehicles, may have been skilled enough to carry out a nefarious operation, but the long arms of the law finally caught up with him recently, when Delhi Police officials arrested him following a special operation.

While Chauhan may have seen the inside of a prison cell before, his latest arrest is being hailed as a major victory for law enforcement officials, with the potential to reduce car thefts in many parts of and around Delhi. After all, Chauhan has been accused of stealing over 5,000 vehicles since 1997. His main line of work as a Class-I contractor in the Assam state government was far more dubious, and according to officials, he frequently managed to give cops the slip.

Chauhan is also accused of supplying illegal weapons, with DCP Central District Shweta Chauhan claiming that the operation against Chauhan was launched as a result of an increase in the supply of such illegal weapons in many parts of central Delhi. After receiving information that the accused had arrived in Delhi, Delhi Police launched a special operation to apprehend him. According to reports, Chauhan was found with one illegal country-made pistol, two live cartridges, and a stolen motorcycle. Additional five country-made pistols and a stolen vehicle were recovered during subsequent investigations.

Police officials say that Chauhan is an accused in as many as 180 criminal cases and while he has been arrested previously as well, has not mended his ways.

Vehicle thefts have been reported in several parts of Delhi in recent months. The stolen vehicles from here are usually transported to northern states, where they are repainted and sold or dismantled for parts. The Delhi Police Department continues to urge vehicle owners in the city to take precautions when parking their vehicles, with tyre and steering locks, alarm locks, and gear shaft mechanics emerging as the most effective deterrents for potential car thieves.
