Mercedes-AMG S63 E-Performance First Look

This is a Mercedes-AMG S63 E-Performance. It’s the most powerful S-Class ever, and it’s arrived in India. If you are an AMG aficionado, you may recall that the 63 AMG logo indicated a full-fat 6.3-litre V8 behind the bulging hood. However, with changing times, 63 meant a smaller 4.0-litre V8. Now it’s 2024, and the S63 emblem is joined by a new suffix: E-performance. This ushers in the era of AMG hybrid engines. This S63 is Mercedes-Benz’s second offering in India, following the flagship GT 63 S E Performance 4-door Coupé, and here’s all you need know about it.

Mercedes-AMG S63 Exterior

What we have here is Edition 1. While it will be offered in limited quantities, it represents the pinnacle of what AMG is capable of, with all of the optional features. But, first and foremost, the face of this S63 AMG is novel, since no S63 before it has a real AMG face. And by that, I mean that for the first time, an S63 is equipped with the AMG-specific Panamericana grille. Furthermore, it lacks a three-pointed star emblem that stands out and leads the way. Instead, you have the Affalterbach emblem, which is a nice touch.

The ornamental quad-exhaust tips at the back are a clear indication of this S-Class’s sporting intents. Because, if you look closely, the actual quad-exhausts are buried within, but these seem much cooler. Manufacturers have recently added a blue or green color to their logos to reflect how environmentally friendly their vehicles are, but AMG has not. Because this S63 logo features ominous red accents.

Mercedes-AMG E-Performance Interior

On the interior, it’s a true S-Class affair, complete with all of the benefits that come with the AMG badge. So you have the S-Class steering wheel, but AMG adds two circular dials for drive modes that make it appear like you’re driving a race vehicle. Carbon fiber finishes on the dashboard are also included, as is Nappa leather throughout. Of course, the large MBUX screen dominates the dashboard, with additional AMG components tossed in.

The back seat is a real S-Class suite, complete with ultra-luxurious chairs, rear seat entertainment, this detachable tablet, a separate zone for air conditioning, and Nappa leather upholstery. However, whereas a conventional S-Class has more than 500 liters of boot capacity, this one only has 310 litres. Because the hybrid system’s battery is located beneath, there is limited boot space.

AMG S63 E-Performance Powertrain

As previously said, the 63 AMG badge indicates a powerful 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, but the E-Performance badge indicates the presence of an electric motor producing over 200 horsepower and 320 Nm. The overall output then exceeds 800 horsepower and 1430 Nm of twisting force. To put things in perspective, the Lamborghini Huracan produces 600 Nm, while the Ferrari SF90 produces over 800 Nm. Even when you combine those, the S63 is still 30 Nm higher. As a consequence, while weighing roughly 2.6 tons, the S63 E-Performance can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds. And the peak speed is electronically controlled to just around 300kmph.

Mercedes has used Formula One experience to design this V8 hybrid powerplant. In addition, the S63 E-Performance may be driven in pure EV mode, with an electric range of 33 kilometers. This battery’s AC charging capacity is 3.7 kW. With so much power available, there’s also all the necessary equipment to keep those horses under control. So you’ve got an active roll bar, active rear limited slip differentials, rear-wheel steering, carbon ceramic brakes, and ADAS.

Mercedes-AMG S63 E-Performance India Price & Launch

The Mercedes-AMG S63 E-Performance will be introduced in India on May 22, with a price tag of roughly Rs 3-3.5 crore (ex-showroom). It will be introduced with the most recent generation of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 flagship luxury SUV, which is part of Mercedes-Benz India’s product offensive for 2024. Returning to the super sedan, the S63 AMG E-Performance is a one-of-a-kind vehicle that can compete with supercars while also transporting you in absolute comfort. It’s an uncommon and difficult combination to pass up.
