Nitin Gadkari Slams Amazon On Selling Clips That Disable Seatbelt Reminder Warning

The famous business mogul Cyrus Mistry was killed in a Mercedes Benz crash, and it appears that this has spurred the Indian government into action. After the accident, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari spoke out strongly and has been tough on both automakers and aftermarket parts vendors. In a recent statement, Mr. Gadkari said that he had asked the online retailer Amazon to stop selling clips that turn off seatbelt reminder warning chimes.

To avoid wearing seat belts, people purchase clips from Amazon. We’ve requested Amazon to stop [selling them] in a letter. I travelled in the cars of four chief ministers; don’t ask me their names; forget the cars driven by regular people. I discovered a clip in the front seat that prevents it from making a noise when there is no seatbelt. Before the car started, I asked the drivers where the seat belts were and made sure I was buckled up. I currently forbid the production and sale of such clips. The issue we have is that there are five lakh accidents and one million fifty thousand fatalities each year in our nation.

Such clips have gained popularity in the aftermarket ever since the Indian government mandated seatbelt reminder warning chimes for front seat passengers in all cars sold in India. These clips, which can be purchased for as little as Rs. 200, turn off the seatbelt reminder warning chimes. Here’s an illustration.

Stop selling devices that disable car seatbelt alarms: Government asks Amazon

The Indian government wants to ensure that all new cars with seat belt reminders function as intended by outlawing seat belt warning disabling clips. Seat belt warning chime is a series of annoying beeps. This government initiative has the potential to save lives if it is strictly enforced by getting more people to buckle their seatbelts.

The seat belt warning chime can be turned off using another method, though. Many people place the seat belt buckle in the holder and sit on top of the seat belt to silence the beeping seatbelt reminder. Even though it might be uncomfortable, this does away with the seatbelt warning chime. Since seatbelts are the primary restraint system in auto accidents and have been proven to save many lives when worn, it is obvious that engaging in such behaviour is extremely risky. Such mischief can be avoided by stricter enforcement by the authorities.

The Indian government has also proposed making six airbags a requirement for all vehicles sold in the country starting on October 1st, 2022. The government’s initiative has been met with opposition from the auto industry, which claims that adding six airbags to budget vehicles could drive up their price and make them unaffordable for buyers who are concerned with affordability. According to the automakers, these consumers might stop purchasing cars altogether and instead stick with two-wheelers, which are less secure than automobiles. Additionally, the Indian government has proposed making six airbags a requirement for all vehicles sold on the Indian market beginning on October 1st, 2022. The government’s initiative has been met with opposition from the auto industry, which claims that the addition of six airbags could drive up the price of low-cost vehicles and make them unaffordable for buyers who are concerned about their wallets. The automakers claim that these consumers may stop purchasing cars altogether and instead choose to keep using two-wheelers, which are less secure than automobiles. Consequently, the auto industry believes that the legislation requiring six airbags as a minimum could be ineffective.
