The Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder RS has reportedly been spotted once more. Yes, it’s a well-known name. However, if our sources are reliable, it will earn that RS badge in a big way because to the roughly 500 horsepower it has under the hood.
When Porsche executives first alluded to such a vehicle in February 2022, the new top-of-the-line 718 Boxster was first suggested. At that time, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS had just made its debut, and as a result, talk of a similar model for the roofless Boxster was inevitable. When a peculiar Boxster Spyder test car was sighted at the Nurburgring sporting additional vents in May, it became clear that the rumours weren’t simply idle rumours. It also rode on center lock wheels, and we know those are reserved for Porsche’s fastest street cars.

On this car, which was photographed winding through Spain’s country roads rather than a racetrack, the same traits are visible. Small vents on top of the quarter panels draw air toward the fabric roof’s rear attachment points. (viagrageneric.org) This Porsche’s vent housings are angled towards the mid-mount engine in the rear view, suggesting that extra airflow for cooling and power is being added. The front is where the real action is, even though the side vents appear a little bigger. Naca vents in the front fenders and ducts in the hood very certainly indicate that this is a Spyder RS.

As a result, we can say with pretty much certainty that the engine behind the driver is RS-worthy. The naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six from the Porsche 911 GT3 is modified for use in the Cayman GT4 RS. In the Cayman, it generates 493 horsepower and reaches a redline of 9,000 rpm while sending power to the rear wheels via a dual-clutch transmission. There’s no reason to think that engine won’t power the Spyder RS given the aerodynamic modifications and centre lock wheels we’ve seen on test cars.
The next question is when Porsche will formally announce it. This test car has no discernible camouflage, although Porsche is known for not being especially interested in concealing its efforts. A debut could occur this week or in a few months. Although we haven’t heard anything concrete, we are very certain that it will at least make its premiere before the year is through.
