Tata Sumo is a legendary vehicle in Indian automotive history. Tata introduced this MUV in 1994, and it soon gained popularity among purchasers. It was so successful that Tata sold over 1 lakh units in three years, which was a major achievement at the time. Tata Sumo is a popular MUV among customers due to its big cabin, no-nonsense design, and smooth ride. It was popular in both the private and business sectors, and Tata continued to make minor tweaks to the Sumo throughout the years to keep it fresh. Here’s a video that shows why people loved and called to Tata Sumo as a legend.
The robust and practical design of the Tata Sumo was the primary reason for its market success. It was an MUV with a rugged SUV style. Tata used to sell a 44-inch Sumo, but it was only available to the army. Sumo’s name has a backstory as well. Tata called the Sumo MUV after Mr. Sumant Moolgaonkar, its former Managing Director. Sumo was formed by combining the initial syllables of Tata’s first and last names.
Video shows various clips where regular rear wheel drive Tata Sumo is seen driving on slushy, water filled and rough road conditions. Most of the Tata Sumo SUVs shown in this video are being used for ferrying people. In many of the Eastern states, Tata Sumo was widely used because the roads on this part of the country were not the best.

The roads in rural areas were often slushy, and a regular hatchback or automobile might quickly become stuck in such conditions. Tata Sumo had sufficient ground clearance, and a fully loaded vehicle provided Sumo with additional grip in such terrains. Because it has better traction, the driver can easily steer the MUV through such terrain without diverting from the track.
The video also shows an Army 44 version of the Tata Sumo traversing a pretty deep mushy area. It also shows the 4×4 variant driving through a rocky creek or river. In comparison to the ordinary 42 Tata Sumo, the 44 version has flared wheel arches and a reworked bumper for a better approach angle. Likewise, it had a distinctive steel rim. It was one of those SUVs with a shift-on-the-fly 4×4 system and an automatic front hub locking system.
Tata Sumo was in production for almost 25 years and due to current safety and emission norms, Tata had discontinued it from the market in 2019. Tata even tried introducing the a much more advanced version of Tata Sumo in the market known as Sumo Grande. It was totally different from the Sumo that people were familiar with and public was actually not that happy with the design as well. Later they had to phase out the Sumo Grande and the Sumo with older boxy design was brought back in the market.
