The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) Explained

The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) was launched by the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari on August 22, 2023, in New Delhi. The program aims to enhance road safety by elevating vehicle safety standards for up to 3.5-tonne vehicles in India. Bharat NCAP will also greatly push the safety and quality of the vehicles in India, while simultaneously promoting healthy competition among OEMs to manufacture safer vehicles.

India will become the fifth country in the world to establish its own automobile crash test rating system as a result of this. Cars tested under the initiative will be marked with the Bharat NCAP emblem and a sticker indicating their rating. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari made the statement confirming the clearance of the BNCAP formal notice earlier today. He also stated that Bharat NCAP has received over 30 requests for testing models and expressed his delight at the automobile industry’s approval of the program.

Bharat NCAP Details

  • The program is applicable to type-approved motor vehicles of the M1 category less than 3.5T GVW.
  • This is a voluntary program in which the base variants of a given model shall be tested.
  • The program will commence on October 1, 2023, and will be based on Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197.
  • The program aims to create an ecosystem of competitive safety enhancements leading to increased awareness among consumers.
  • Consumers can take an informed decision by making a comparative assessment of vehicle performance under crash test conditions.

How Does Bharat NCAP Work?

  • A vehicle model is chosen by the automobile manufacturer.
  • The Bharat NCAP team will visit the vehicle’s manufacturing site and choose the basic variant by random sampling.
  • The manufacturer will then send the chosen car to the Bharat NCAP testing center.
  • The chosen vehicle will be crash tested in front of officials from the car manufacturer and the Bharat NCAP team.
  • The test findings will be gathered and communicated with the automobile manufacturer before being approved by the Bharat NCAP standing committee.
  • Following approval by the standing committee, Bharat NCAP will publish the star ratings and crash test data of that specific vehicle, and the certificate will be given by the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT).

Benefits of Bharat NCAP

  • Bharat NCAP will help to improve the safety of vehicles in India.
  • It will promote healthy competition among OEMs to manufacture safer vehicles.
  • It will help to create awareness among consumers about the safety features of vehicles.
  • It will help to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities in India.

Conclusion

The launch of Bharat NCAP is a major step towards improving road safety in India. The program is expected to have a positive impact on the safety of vehicles and the behavior of drivers. It is a win-win for both manufacturers and consumers, and it is an important step towards making India a safer place to drive.
