Watch: Ford Mustangs Mountain Drift

The Ford Mustang has all the ingredients for an impressive drift car: it’s a high-powered muscle car that can only be moved by its rear wheels. And in this mountain drift video by Vaughn Gittin Jr., it actually did that.

Not one, but two Ford Mustangs designed for drifting competitions were the main casts of this brief mountain pass. The objective was to slide all the way up Wilkesboro, North Carolina’s backroads. Nobody was surprised that it was successful because Vaughn Gittin Jr. was driving.

Professional drifter Gittin Jr., also known as JR, is renowned for his amazing sideways stints in a Ford Mustang. Using his Mustang RTR Spec 5-D, sponsored by Monster Energy, Nitto Tire, and Ford Performance, he won the Formula Drift championship in 2010 and 2020. JR was joined in the video by Chelsea DeNofa, another member of his Formula Drift Championship team.

The first three minutes of the video embedded above allow you to see how enjoyable the final product was. With a cameo appearance by a Mustang Mach-E acting as a chase car, it went on to depict the events that were taking place behind the scenes. (divinewoodncrafts.com) Of course, filming the entire thing was extremely difficult.

First off, JR and his team had a very difficult time pulling off this stunt because the roads were too narrow. Then, due to the sun’s position and the amount of smoke coming from the tyres, it was nearly impossible to capture the entire event on camera. However, as you can see in the video up top, this crew is capable of anything.

JR was no stranger to incredible feats. He and DeNofa navigated explosives staged inside a tactical facility last year while riding in a jumping Ultra4 4400 class Ford Bronco. In the Faroe Islands, Gittin Jr. also destroyed a Ford Mustang Mach-E 1400. It was an attention-grabbing combination of stunning scenery and quick-paced action.
