If you’re anything like us, you’ve fantasised about driving a single-seater, open-wheeled race car on the street. One unidentified driver in the Czech Republic did exactly that, driving a genuine GP2 racer with a Ferrari-themed livery on a public highway.

The Czech website idnez.cz and Twitter user MigueluVE shared footage of the driver’s antics shot by passengers in other vehicles online. The GP2 car is a Dallara GP2/08, which is obviously not road legal. That didn’t seem to deter the car’s owner from donning a racing suit, slipping on a helmet, and taking a spin behind the wheel.

According to Road & Track, this isn’t the first time the car’s owner has been seen driving it on public roads. In fact, he appears to have been doing this since as early as 2019, which appears to be the first time the car was seen on Czech Republic streets. Police asked the public for assistance in locating the driver at the time, but it does not appear that they were ever identified.

Between 2008 and 2010, Dallara built the GP2/08. It is powered by a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated Renault V8 engine that sounds identical to a Formula One engine. The car has a little more than 600 hp and is powered by a Hewland six-speed sequential semi-automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. That is more than sufficient for a vehicle weighing only 688 kg (1,517 pounds).
