It showcases performance parts available through Direct Connection while honoring Dodge’s original hot hatch, the Omni GLH.
Carroll Shelby didn’t tune Ford Mustangs in 1984. He was immersed in the Dodge performance scene, giving many different vehicles extra life. The Omni GLH, where GLH literally stood for “goes like hell,” was arguably the most well-known — or shocking — Shelby product of the time. With the Hornet GT GLH Concept, Dodge is paying homage to that legacy. It was a true hot hatchback that developed a cult following over the years.
Naturally, the design is directly inspired by the brand-new 2023 Dodge Hornet compact crossover. Dodge isn’t holding back in this section either; it comes out strong with blurbs about power and speed where typically you’d hear about practicality and price. By demonstrating what speed-hungry Hornet buyers can do with upgraded parts obtained through Dodge Direct Connection, the GT GLH Concept goes one step further.
The Hornet’s suspension has been lowered by an inch as part of the upgrades, giving it a more street-oriented stance. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in the Hornet GT has a “unrestrictive” dual exhaust system with black chrome tips. It has 20-inch painted Direct Connection wheels that are unique, special GLH graphics, and black-painted lower trim for a suitably gloomy, vintage GLH appearance. Direct Connection offers stage kits that include extras like ECU tunes.
The Hornet GT GLH Concept shows off aftermarket parts, but could Dodge manufacture something similar in-house? There are no signs that would occur, and the standard Hornet GT already has 265 horsepower, so this small crossover isn’t exactly slow. The base model of Dodge claims a 0-60 mph time of 6.5 seconds. The R/T PHEV, which costs more, has all-wheel drive and a combined output of over 285 hp, resulting in a 6.1-second sprint to 60 mph. The Hornet R/T PHEV can also travel more than 30 miles on electricity alone.
In late 2022, dealer showrooms will begin to carry the new Dodge Hornet GT.
