The first produces 164 bhp and 245 Nm of peak torque, while the second produces 201 bhp and 420 Nm of torque (500 Nm when linked with an AT). Six-speed manual and six-speed torque converter automatic transmissions are available.

The upcoming five-door Thar will also use the new body-on-frame chassis that supports the Mahindra Scorpio N. It has a 2.0-liter mStallion gasoline engine and a 2.2-liter mHawk diesel engine. The 2.2-liter oil-burner is only offered with a six-speed manual transmission and produces 132 bhp and 300 Nm of peak torque in its base trim. The more potent model produces 175 horsepower and 370 Newton metres when connected to a six-speed manual transmission, and 175 horsepower/400 Newton metres in the top-spec trims when paired with a six-speed AT.
