What’s in style now and what’s not? The latest new car registrations data from the SMMT reveals which automobiles are winning the hearts and wallets of British buyers — and which are losing ground. Here are the top-selling automobiles in 2022 after two months on the market.
After an extraordinary year in which the market was affected hard by the semiconductor scarcity and continuous turmoil owing to the pandemic, the Vauxhall Corsa led the rankings in 2021. Manufacturers will continue to be concerned about these difficulties in 2022, though they are projected to subside as the year develops. It’s unclear how this will affect the top ten cars, although the Corsa was in first place at the end of February.

1. Vauxhall Corsa – 4282 Units
The revamped Corsa had a successful 2021, finishing as the UK’s best-selling car. Its success is in part due to its PSA-developed underpinnings and mix of petrol, diesel and electric powertrains. Two months into 2022, it is in first place again, up from its fifth place in January.

2. Kia Sportage – 4134 Units
The Sportage ended February in second place with 4134 sales so far this year. The fourth-generation SUV is a smash hit for the firm, offering both petrol and diesel options, but it will be completely overhauled inside and out later this year. It will be the first time the model will gain a variant specific to Europe, too.

3. Mini 3dr/5dr – 4088 Units
Despite its age, the Mini continues to be as popular as ever. It finished 2021 in third place, ahead of superminis such as the Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Yaris. With a versatile line-up of petrol, electric convertible and John Cooper Works performance variants, the Mini can always be relied on for drivability and alluring looks. A new Mini is set to arrive in 2023.

4. Ford Puma – 3773 Units
The Ford Puma crossover finishes the second month of the year in fourth place with 3773 sales. Its driving dynamics and attractive pricing are the key draws for owners and the range has swollen recently with the addition of a plush Vignale trim and a warm-blooded ST version.

5. Vauxhall Mokka – 3659 Units
The recently updated Vauxhall Mokka compact crossover is the firm’s second model in the top 10. An almost entirely different proposition from the old, General Motors-built Mokka, the new car features a bold new design and a host of punchy Stellantis powertrains.

6. Kia Niro – 3556 Units
The Niro is still proving to be one of the best ways to dip your toe into electrification, with a competent hybrid variant and a class-leading electric model. Kia will refresh the model later this year, when the Nissan Qashqai rival will grow in size slightly, with updated powertrains and a new exterior design.

7. Hyundai Tucson – 3013 Units
The Tucson regularly appeared in the top 10 last year, stating its claim to be one of the best-selling SUVs in the country. The model was refreshed in 2021 when it gained a new front end with a unique lighting set-up.

8. Ford Focus – 2634 Units
Ford’s venerable Focus is holding on to a top 10 position ahead of its major update later this year. The hatchback has sold 2634 units so far this year. It will be revamped with a new front end, with the Ford badge moved to the centre of the grille, and standard kit and interior tech will be vastly improved.

9. Toyota Corolla – 2590 Units
The only Toyota entry in the top ten. The Corolla has been produced in the United Kingdom since 2019 and is equipped with a powerful hybrid powertrain. Later this year, the car will get a new SUV model, rounding out the company’s SUV lineup.

10 Volvo XC40 – 2437 Units
After two months in 2022, the Volvo XC40 is still in the top ten. The model’s exterior appearance has just been updated, with new bumpers and a new front grille. The Volvo XC40, which is available as a full electric vehicle and a mild hybrid, has sold 2437 units so far this year.
