A V8 engine should be offered in this eight-passenger SUV.
We see certain camouflaged test vehicles on a regular basis, while others only surface on rare occasions. This is only the third time we’ve seen a prototype in public since August 2021, thus the expanded Land Rover Defender 130 comes into that category. That may lead to one of two conclusions: either Land Rover is working extremely hard to keep it a secret, or there isn’t much testing going on. (stylerecap.com)
Only Land Rover personnel know for sure, so we’ll leave such conclusions open to argument. Based on our observations, it’s probable that the automaker’s 130 testing programme isn’t as rigorous as it should be. It looks like a 110, but with a little additional body behind the rear axle. We believe the wheelbase is the same, and from what we can see of the exterior design, it’s a carbon copy of the 110 from the rear doors all the way to the front. Granted, the camouflage wrap conceals small details. But overall, the 130 should just be a slightly longer 110.

How much longer do we have to talk? According to rumours, it will increase the overall length by 13 inches, allowing for extra cargo room as well as eight-passenger seats. It won’t be an athletic on-road performance SUV, as these photographs from the Nürburgring show, though we believe the supercharged V8 will be available. Our intelligence sources believe this specific prototype is powered by the same 518-horsepower (386-kilowatt) supercharged 5.0-liter engine used in other Defender trim levels. It may lean through bends, but with so much power, the big 130 should be able to hammer through straightaways.

The V8 won’t be the only engine option. With record-high fuel pricesand ever-tightening emission regulations, the Defender 130 is also expected to offer a range of gasoline and diesel options. The plug-in hybrid powertrain should come to the stretched SUV as well, though it’s unclear if that will happen at launch. And for those craving a Defender with a pickup bed, we hear the 130 could make that happen.
A debut is expected later this year as a 2023 model.
