Lego RC Car with Gearbox & Clutch

Legos are more than just toys for inquisitive children. Plastic building bricks are a blank canvas, a versatile tool for limitless imagination. Lego has embraced the automobile with intricate kits of iconic and new machines, but a new video from the Brick Technology YouTube video channel demonstrates the versatility of the bricks by creating a working Lego RC hot rod with a four-speed gearbox and complex clutch assembly.

The video packs a lot into eight minutes, starting with the gearbox assembly. The build quickly becomes complicated, with a simple two-speed gearbox evolving into a four-speed unit. The shifter, which employs a 90-degree stepper mechanism, a shifter mechanism, and a 180-degree servo motor, is the next step. The clutch assembly is next in the design process, and a thermal view of the build reveals a large amount of heat coming from the clutch plate, just like a real car.

The following video step connects the engine to the clutch, which is linked to the four-speed gearbox and shifter. The build begins to resemble an RC car at this point, with a PlayStation controller controlling the various vehicle mechanics – clutch, acceleration, upshift, and downshift. It’s fascinating to see all the intricately moving parts, but it’s still not a proper RC car.

Everything is combined into a single, compact chassis, but the build also includes a functional suspension. The body, which looks like a cross between a generic hot rod and a Chrysler Prowler, is the final piece of the puzzle. It looks fantastic, with working headlights and taillights, although there isn’t much of a cabin with the mechanicals taking up most of the space.

The video concludes with a demonstration of the hot rod Lego RC car’s suspension and towing capacity. It can tow a large water bottle thanks to its four-speed transmission. It’s a cool design that could easily keep children and the child in all of us entertained for hours. Lego has taken notice as well.
