Mercedes-AMG Launches 650hp GT3 Edition 55

Mercedes-AMG is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year, and the automaker has a unique way of commemorating the occasion with its fans. The company unveils the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 55 race car, which will be produced in a very limited run of only five examples. The machine includes several hardware upgrades over the standard GT3, some of which transform it into the most hardcore race car with a three-pointed star logo. But there’s a simple explanation for that.

One of the race car’s distinguishing features is that it is not FIA homologated, which means there are no restrictions on aerodynamics, engine, exhaust, or weight. As a result, the 6.3-liter V8 engine beneath the skin has been tuned to produce 650 horsepower (478 kilowatts), or about 100 horsepower (73 kW) more than the FIA homologated version. Furthermore, the performance exhaust system now comes without the required silencer and produces an even more sonorous sound.

The GT3 Edition 55 features exclusive touches such as seat embroidery with a “Edition 55 – 1 of 5” inscription. Anthracite metallic paint dominates the interior, with visible carbon fibre elements. The seat belts, for their part, have silver accents.

On the technological front, the cabin is outfitted with the most recent generation of the company’s data display unit (DDU), supplied by Bosch. It has a high-resolution graphic screen that displays pertinent data such as speed, engine speed, operating temperatures, lap times, and so on. AMG’s 55th-anniversary logo appears on the screen when the GT3 Edition 55 is started, which is a nice small touch.

A special tailor-made car cover and an Edition 55 box from IWC Schaffhausen, which contains a Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” as well as a black textile strap, round out the exclusive features. Mercedes-AMG will produce only five copies of the anniversary race car, each with a unique set of serial numbers (GT3.190-55). Without VAT, the price is €625,000, or approximately $620,000 at current exchange rates.
