Tesla Model Y is now the best-selling car in all of Europe

In November, the Tesla Model Y surpassed the Volkswagen Golf as Europe’s best-selling passenger car.

After dropping out of the top 50 in October, the electric crossover rebounded strongly in November, selling 19,144 units, a more than 260 percent increase over the same month last year. In September, the Model Y was also Europe’s best-selling vehicle.

Tesla’s European sales increased 97 percent in November to 31,820 units, owing largely to a 260 percent increase in Model Y sales.

The Model Y was the only EV on Europe’s November sales podium, with the Dacia Sandero coming in second with 18,746 units sold (a 16 percent increase) and the Toyota Yaris coming in third with 17,309 units sold (up 150 percent).

According to Dataforce’s preliminary figures cited by Automotive News Europe, the Peugeot 208 – which also has an all-electric variant – is Europe’s overall best-seller year to date, with 193,743 units sold. The French subcompact hatchback is expected to be Europe’s best-seller by the end of 2022.

Six different models finished the month as Europe’s best-sellers through November, but only two of them were all-electric – the Tesla Model 3 (March) and Tesla Model Y (November) (September, November).

Interestingly, the Tesla Model 3 dethroned the Tesla Model Y in Germany, Europe’s largest car market, in November. According to data from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, the sedan has surpassed the crossover as the most-registered electric vehicle in Germany (KBA).

In November, Tesla sold 6,811 Model 3s in Germany, compared to 3,687 Model Ys. Last month also saw the start of Model S and Model X deliveries in Germany, with Tesla selling 106 and 35 units, respectively.

Tesla delivered 10,819 vehicles in Germany, a 93 percent increase year on year. November 2022 was the automaker’s second-best month in the country, trailing only September.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk famously predicted earlier this year that the Model Y would become the world’s best-selling vehicle overall in 2023. That appears to be a possibility right now, as the Model Y dominates sales charts in Europe and other regions.
