In the Indian automobile industry, the hatchback segment has always been a strong contributor to sales. However, SUVs (particularly sub-4 metre SUVs) have surpassed hatchbacks in the current fiscal year. In order to reclaim the top spot, India’s top three hatchbacks will enter a new generation in the coming years. The following are key details about the upcoming next-generation Swift, Alto, and Tiago.
1. NEW-GEN MARUTI ALTO
The new-generation Maruti Alto, which is currently in testing, is expected to hit the road around the 2022 Diwali season. The modular Heartect platform that underpins Maruti Suzuki’s new breed of cars will be one of the major updates. The new model will be wider, taller, and have a longer wheelbase than the current model. The hatchback will have a completely redesigned front fascia as well as a few other noticeable changes. The Maruti Alto 2022 is expected to include features such as a touchscreen infotainment system, a semi-digital instrument cluster, keyless entry, power steering, and more. Under the hood, it could have a 796cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine with manual or AMT transmission options. The automaker could offer the Celerio’s K10C Dualjet petrol engine as well.
2. NEW-GEN MARUTI SWIFT
The Swift hatchback, which is currently in its third generation in Japan, will enter its fourth generation this year. While the all-new hatchback will be unveiled near the end of 2022, its market debut is expected to take place sometime next year. Its India launch date has yet to be announced. According to reports, the all-new Swift will power the Heartect platform and will feature significant design changes. It will continue to be available in 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol and 1.2L petrol with mild hybrid tech. Both motors could be tuned to improve performance and fuel efficiency.
3. NEW-GEN TATA TIAGO
The Tata Tiago, which debuted in 2016, will receive its first mid-life update in 2020. While the model is still relatively new and updated, it is expected to be replaced in the next 2-3 years. As of now, information about the all-new Tata Tiago is scarce. However, it is expected to move away from the ‘X0’ platform and toward the brand’s new Alfa architecture derived from the Altroz premium hatchback. Inside and out, a few noticeable changes are expected. The engine configuration, however, may be carried over from the current model.
