2023 Mercedes Maybach S680 by Virgil Abloh

It will be sold in the US in very limited numbers.

Mercedes-Maybach grabbed headlines in December of last year with its Project Maybach concept, which was designed by Virgil Abloh, a well-known fashion designer. After being diagnosed with cardiac angiosarcoma in 2019, Abloh died in November 2021. His legacy and competence, on the other hand, will live on in the new Mercedes-Maybach S680.

This car is the result of a collaboration between Louis Vuitton’s artistic director and a German premium automaker. The new Maybach created by Virgil Abloh is a production model that will be marketed in the United States, unlike the Project Maybach, which was a show car with a very extravagant design and overall idea. It’s based on a Maybach S-Class S 680 from 2023, with a planned manufacturing run of only 39 cars for the US market.

The fashion designer collaborated with Mercedes-Benz Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener to develop the basic design concept for the luxury sedan. Before Abloh’s sad death in November, the car was completed in 2021. The customisation and craftsmanship team at Mercedes-Benz Manufaktur in Sindelfingen is responsible for bringing the project to life.

The Virgil Abloh-designed Maybach S-Class has a unique two-tone colour scheme with a beige main colour and contrasting black roof, hood, bonnet, and pillars. The trademark Maybach 20-inch wheels are also coated in the same beige colour, and while this may seem like an odd choice, the rims are extremely stunning. This is the same colour scheme as that used on the Project Maybach.

Fine beige leather covers the seats, door panels, armrests, and the lower area of the dashboard in the same colour scheme as the exterior. Almost everything is completed in black leather, starting with the centre screen. Mercedes-Maybach claims that the centre console display now runs a customised user interface, which is a “more opulent” version of the automaker’s MBUX system.

The Maybach S680 is powered by a 6.0-liter V12 engine that produces 604 horsepower at its peak (450 kilowatts). This power allows the luxury limo to accelerate from a standstill to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometres per hour) in 4.5 seconds. The top speed is limited to 155 mph by an electronic limiter (250 kph).
