Wuling Mini EV GameBoy Edition Is A Fashion Take On China’s Cheapest EV

Have you ever wondered which electric vehicle is the most popular in China? It’s not a Tesla, to be sure. According to the China Passenger Car Association, the Wuling Mini sold 395,451 units last year, nearly tripling its output from the previous year. This made the budget-friendly model the best-selling EV in the country, with another locally-produced vehicle (BYD Qin) coming in second and the Tesla Model Y coming in third. The Mini is getting a new special edition to commemorate its achievements and keep demand high through 2022.

Hurricane Phantom, Jungle Traveler, Star Rover, and Party Sweetheart are the four various variants of the Mini GameBoy Edition. Each one has a slightly distinct exterior finish, different wheels, and various trim. In addition to updated headlights with LED daytime running lights, the special edition Mini EVs have a reworked front fascia with an additional LED strip linking the two light clusters.

The Mini EV GameBoy edition’s proportions have changed somewhat from the standard model, which is interesting. The length has been raised by 80 mm, bringing it to 2,997 mm, but the height has been reduced by 17 mm, bringing it to 1,604 mm. The bigger and more powerful electric motor with 41 horsepower (30 kilowatts) instead of the original 27-hp (20-kW) electric motor is probably the most significant modification.

Chinese media reports the car will receive a battery with a capacity of 26.5 kWh, which will provide a range of up to 174 miles (280 kilometers) according to the CLTC standard. This is more than a significant increase as the electric car is currently available with four battery options that allow an EV range of between 75 to 105 miles (120 to 170 km) without recharging. However, there’s no official word from the manufacturer yet confirming the larger battery pack.

The Wuling Mini EV has a top speed of 62 miles per hour in basic version (100 kilometres per hour). With a starting price of around $4,200, it is still China’s cheapest new electric vehicle. The top of the range is around $5,700 for a fully loaded vehicle.
