Second-Gen Ford Fiesta Turned Into 159 MPH Drag Moster

In August 1983, the second-generation Ford Fiesta made its premiere, and it was the first Fiesta with a diesel engine. The model preserved its predecessor’s boxy general form, but included a new interior and a few additional powerplant options. Even the most powerful variants were slow by today’s standards, so it remained a modest city car. One of the main motivations for the owner of this second-gen Fiesta to turn their car into a drag beast was presumably because of this.

Phil from Newbury, England, is introduced in a new video by Barcroft Cars on YouTube. He was considered a fool for even considering building a proper drag racer based on the Fiesta when he informed his pals he was going to construct one. This was probably sufficient for Phil to start working on the project by obtaining a car for around $340. He got a few raised eyebrows from some of the Fiesta purists in the region shortly after the beginning, after the real cutting began.

Months of work resulted in the vehicle you see now. There’s not much left of the original Fiesta, and it’s now powered by a radically tuned 2.0-liter inline-four engine that produces an astonishing 820 horsepower (603 kilowatts). The overall cost of construction is roughly $54,000, however keep in mind that this is a car that can reach a top speed of 159.7 miles per hour (257 kilometres per hour). Is this the world’s fastest Fiesta? It’s possible that Ken Block will disagree, but it’s also plausible that he will.

The drag monster’s body is still the original Fiesta body, and the steering wheel is the same. Almost everything in the engine compartment is new or upgraded, including the suspension.

But what’s the feeling behind the wheel? “My first emotion is a relief that I haven’t died on that run,” Phil says. And what’s this Fiesta’s best quarter-mile time? It is currently doing 9.1-second runs and is pretty close to being the quickest four-cylinder Ford drag car in the world. A few more months and modifications, Phil hopes, and it will beat the record.
