The narrow taillights from the crossover look good on the sedan.
The long-rumored Mazda6 with rear-wheel drive isn’t coming any time soon, but that doesn’t stop people from fantasising about how it might appear. This time, Kolesa presents a fictitious rendition of the rumoured Mazda6 based on the automaker’s newest design language – and we like what we see, with a few misgivings.
Unlike the previous representation, which was simply a development of the existing Mazda6’s Kodo appearance, Kolesa’s design is inspired by the CX-60. The front and back fascias, slim lighting elements, and wheels all give these clues.
While the lights and boxed-off nose look nice in sedan form, the wheel design makes this variant look like a Honda Accord (especially with the fastback form). We like what we’re seeing in the back, however the execution is a little German-esque, which isn’t always a negative thing.
The utilisation of the CX-60’s design elements isn’t a wild guess. Mazda’s Skyactiv Multi Solution Scalable Architecture is used in the all-new crossover. This new platform is rear-wheel-drive and can accommodate six-cylinder engines and plug-in hybrid powertrains, which was previously stated as Mazda’s direction with the ‘6.

Mazda has already ruled out a RWD Mazda6 as previously stated. Mazda Europe development and engineering manager Joachim Kunz acknowledged to Autocar that the Japanese business is currently focusing on crossovers and SUVs rather than building a new Mazda6. It’s an understandable move, given that these high-riding vehicles have long been among the brand’s best-sellers.
This announcement has put an end to rumours that the Japanese automaker is planning a sportier midsize sedan. It’s an understandable business decision. If you still want to buy a Mazda6, though, you should wait for the improvements that are already in the works.
