The Union government informed the Rajya Sabha that more than 8.5 lakh electric vehicles had been registered in the country, with the state of Uttar Pradesh having the greatest number of electric vehicles. Maharashtra ranks fifth in the number of electric vehicles registered, according to Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.
According to Gadkari, Uttar Pradesh leads the way in terms of electric car registrations, followed by Delhi and Karnataka. There are currently 8,70,141 electric vehicles registered in the country, with Uttar Pradesh having the largest number of 2,55,700 electric vehicles.

In terms of registered electric vehicles, Delhi ranks second and Karnataka third. In Delhi, 1,25,347 vehicles have been registered, while in the state of Karnataka, 72,544 vehicles have been registered. After that 58,014 electric vehicles have been registered in Bihar and 52,506 in Maharashtra.
More than 5 lakh vehicles have been registered in the above 5 states, while the remaining vehicles have been registered in the rest of the states. These vehicles include two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers.

To promote electric, hybrid vehicles as an alternative to fuels like petrol and diesel, the central government had in 2015 launched a scheme called ‘Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India’ (FAME). The second phase of this scheme has been implemented from 1st April 2019 for 5 years. Gadkari also said that GST on electric vehicle chargers and charging stations has been reduced from 18 per cent to 5 per cent.

Winter Session of the Parliament, Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, informed the Rajya Sabha on the state of Electric Vehicles (EV) in India. As per the data, India has a total of 870,141 registered EVs, with Uttar Pradesh (UP) holding the top spot with 255,700 registered EVs.14-Dec-2021
