It’s not every day that a new brand joins the automobile sector, let alone one that specializes in smartphone manufacturing. However, in an event as rare as a solar eclipse, Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has recently revealed its first electric automobile, the Xiaomi SU7. The four-door electric car takes on electric behemoths such as Porsche and Tesla, and it has some significant punch to back it up. Let’s have a look at what the Xiaomi SU7 is all about:
Xiaomi SU7 Design
The 5-metre (4,997mm) car appears to be inspired by a variety of global brands. Its silhouette is reminiscent of the Porsche Taycan, as well as the Hyundai Ioniq 6. In terms of design, there isn’t much going on at the front.
A basic air dam is flanked by vents, presumably for channeling air and enhancing efficiency. The muscular haunches on either side of the bonnet provide character, while the coupe-like smooth, yet sloping roofline defines the profile. There are also stylish Lamborghini-inspired alloys, and the back appears to emulate a conventionally ubiquitous modern car.
However, a spoiler that lies flush with the bonnet is included, as are two large diffuser-like pieces on the bumper, which contribute to the SU7’s sporty appeal from the rear. While the overall look is athletic, it is far from appropriate for the performance metrics displayed. We’ll get to that later. Oh, and don’t forget about the amazing boot space of 517 litres. That’s real full-size SUV territory!
Xiaomi SU7 Interior
Xiaomi, like other new EVs and the SU7’s immediate competition (Tesla), has opted for a minimalistic cabin centered on the massive 16.1-inch monitor-like touchscreen interface. A thick central panel with several storage places and physical buttons for various tasks separates the occupants.
The driver is given a three-spoke steering wheel with dials similar to those found in a Porsche 911 GT3 and a compact digital driver’s display. A 25-speaker sound system, a 56-inch heads-up display, two dedicated displays for rear passengers, ADAS capabilities, a complete glass roof (which trumps a panoramic sunroof any day of the week), and much more are included.
Xiaomi SU7 Powertrain
The SU7 will be available in two configurations: rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. While both drivetrains have great specifications, the latter outperforms wow-spec junkies. Over 800 km of claimed range on a single charge and a 0-100 kmph pace in just 2.78 seconds are impressive stats.
Parameters | SU7 | SU7 Max |
Battery capacity | 73.6kWh | 101kWh |
Orientation | Single motor, rear-wheel drive | Dual motor, all-wheel drive |
Charging architecture | 400 volt | 800 volt |
Output | 299PS/400Nm | 673PS/838Nm |
Range (claimed) | 668km | 800km |
0-100kmph (claimed) | 5.28 seconds | 2.78 seconds |
Top speed | 210kmph | 265kmph |
Based on an 800 V infrastructure, you can expect the charging speeds will be electrifying. It’s no surprise that the presentation included direct comparisons to the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S.
Xiaomi SU7 Launch and Rivals
The SU7’s launch date has not yet been revealed, however a launch in China could be followed by a launch in other nations. There has been no confirmation of an India launch date as of yet. The Xiaomi SU7 competes directly with the Porsche Taycan, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Tesla Model S.
