Car Scrapping Policy Simplified | RTO Rules In India

Scrapping 15 Years Old Car : When, Why And How

Your vehicle has a lifespan, and driving it past that point can have serious effects, affecting not only your safety but also the environment. As a result, each Indian state sets varying time limits for different types of cars to operate on the road. They are expelled from the state if they exceed that limit. One possibility is to re-register such cars in a different state, but this must be done before the RC expires and with the permission of the prior RTO. However, for obvious reasons, that is difficult to endorse. A vehicle that has reached the end of its useful life must be discarded in such a way that it can be recycled without causing harm to the environment.

Why Should You Scrap Your Car ?

Car Scrapping Policy Simplified | RTO Rules In India

Over time, when your car’s parts wear out, its performance begins to deteriorate. It eventually begins to generate hazardous gases as well. A car is said to be scrapped when it reaches this point. However, when a car is declared scrap, the authorities utilise specific criteria. In Maharashtra, for example, petrol and diesel cars can be driven for 15 years before being deemed trash by the government. Things are different in Delhi, where pollution is clearly more of a concern than in other states. Diesel cars have a 10-year limit, while petrol cars have a 15-year limit. Cars in states like Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Karnataka are allowed to remain on the road until they are repaired. Varying states have different procedures for declaring vehicles as junk, so it’s always a good idea to check with local officials.

Key Points To Remember

When your vehicle is no longer roadworthy, you must follow the procedures for scrapping an old car in your state. But before you do that, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Before scrapping your car, make sure you contact an authorised scrap dealer and verify that the chassis number has been deleted. It’s also a good idea to take a few photos before a vehicle is wrecked. Also, be sure that when you ask the authorised dealer to destroy your car, they truly do so, because there’s a potential that they’ll sell it to someone else who will use it for nefarious purposes.

Step By Step Guide

Although the entire process will take some time, it is critical that you follow the requirements when scrapping an old car.

  • Start by telling your local RTO office about your choice to scrap your car if it has reached the end of its useful life.
  • Surrender your RC document and chassis number plate: The RTO will then ask you to submit your vehicle’s RC document as well as its chassis number plate, which is a unique code granted to each vehicle in the country.
  • Remove your vehicle from the records: The RTO will handle this for you. Your car will be de-registered from the offices’ records, allowing it to be scrapped.
  • Approach a scrap dealer: To complete the scrapping process, take your car to any authorised dealer.
