Ferrari 296 GTS Debuts With Unlimited Headroom And Hybrid V6 Power

The retractable hardtop needs 14 seconds to go up or down.

The first Ferrari-badged V6 supercar arrived in June 2021, and now we’re getting to know its more practical twin. No, that two-seat cabin doesn’t have any extra baggage space, but you can now lower the roof for more headroom. The 296 Gran Turismo Spider (GTS) is come to soak up more sun than the 296 GTB.

It gets a retractable hardtop (RHT) in traditional Ferrari design, which basically preserves the coupe’s look while it’s up. When travelling at speeds of up to 30 mph (45 km/h), the folding roof takes 14 seconds to open or close. Press the button to lower the top and the roof will split into two sections that fold flush over the engine bay.

You can still appreciate the 3.0-liter V6 engine, which produces 663 horsepower on its own, thanks to a window in the back part. The Ferrari 296 GTS produces a huge 830 horsepower (610 kW) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque when combined with the electric motor. It has enough plug-in hybrid power to accelerate from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.9 seconds and from zero to 124 mph (200 km/h) in 7.6 seconds. Maranello claims that their electrified convertible will reach speeds of exceeding 205 mph (330 km/h). When powered by electricity, the top speed lowers to 84 mph (135 km/h).

One-percenters will most likely be concerned about the weight penalty compared to the coupe because it is a convertible. A folding roof, particularly a hardtop, adds complexity because body reinforcements are required to maintain stiffness. If the optional Assetto Fiorano package is used, the 296 GTS has a dry weight of 1,540 kilos (3,395 pounds). By the numbers, the Italian Spider is 70 kg (154 lbs) heavier than its coupe counterpart.

The new 296 GTS, like the variant with the fixed roof, has an all-electric range of 15.5 miles (25 kilometres) thanks to a 7.45-kWh battery pack. The mid-engined cabrio, like the coupe, is equipped with the same dual-clutch, eight-speed automatic transmission used in the SF90 Stradale / Spider and the Roma / Portofino.

The 296 GTS isn’t Ferrari’s first premiere this year; the Purosangue SUV will be shown in just a few months.
