Tesla fans are super-excited about the new Model Y, but you may want to stick with a different version.
Andy Slye, a Tesla supporter and owner who is a friend of InsideEVs, admits that he was thrilled when Tesla announced its Battery Day plans. Model Y crossovers with 4680 battery cells and structural packs are now being produced by the US electric manufacturer. Despite his enthusiasm, Slye has concluded that he will not purchase the new Model Y.
To be clear, Slye visited Tesla’s new Austin Gigafactory and was almost convinced that a new Model Y with 4680 cells was on the way. With demand so strong and delivery windows so far away, Slye made the wise decision to place an order in October 2021, even if it was for the current Model Y Long Range option.
Slye reasoned that he could put his Model Y Long Range order on hold in the hopes of receiving one of the new made-in-Texas choices. However, reports have emerged that Tesla will use the 4680 battery cells and structural pack in a new Standard Range all-wheel-drive model. This is the section that swayed Slye’s opinion.
The Model Y Standard Range AWD with 4680 cells has a range of 270 miles and a zero-to-60-mph time of 5 seconds. It is available for $59,990 as a starting price. In comparison, the Model Y Long Range has a starting price of $62,990 on Tesla’s website. For an extra $3,000, you get an extra 330 miles of range and a slightly faster 0-60 time. You do not, however, receive the new cells or pack.

Remember that when Slye ordered his Model Y in October of last year, he got the current pricing, which was less than what the new Model Y costs today. Tesla’s costs fluctuate, but according to our research, the Long Range version began at roughly $56,990 in October 2021 (or less depending on the schedule). Slye claims that his order totaled $53,000.
The added range, according to Slye, is a no-brainer. This is especially true if the EV is less expensive and he can get it sooner. Let’s face it, most people will have no idea the cells and pack style your Model Y possesses. On the flip side, you will know that you have much less range. It all really comes down to whether you have an existing Model Y order, and what your use-case is for the EV.

He discusses charging speed, charging to 100%, and the fact that the 4680 cells and structural pack look to be more expensive than Tesla’s present technology. It appears that “scale economies” will be required to get to a stage where Tesla can demonstrate cost reductions.
