$100K Tesla Model S Totaled In Crash: TeslaCam Footage Used As Evidence

A built-in dashcam can prove very valuable in proving your innocence.

This Tesla Model S was totaled in a head-on collision with a red-light runner, as you can see in the video above. The Tesla driver’s innocence is shown by footage from the built-in dashcam (TeslaCam).

When it comes to automobile accidents, determining who was at fault isn’t always straightforward for the authorities, which can present issues when it comes to dealing with your insurance. Both drivers usually have a narrative to tell, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the accounts were different.

For this reason, the police at the scene not only have to rely on details from the stories, but also clues from the scene. Perhaps more importantly, they can ask other witnesses what happened, as long as there are actually witnesses to question. However, if someone has dashcam footage, it can help immensely.

Tesla, on the other hand, equips all of its vehicles with a built-in dashcam known as “TeslaCam.” The Model S driver had to perform a left turn on red in the TeslaCam clip displayed in the YouTube video above. While he was waiting to turn at the intersection, the light changed. Before finishing the bend, he double-checked that no one was approaching. An oncoming automobile, however, ran the red light and collided with the Tesla. Despite the ferocity of the collision, no one was injured.

Because he was turning while the other driver was travelling straight, the Model S owner’s insurance company said he would have been judged at blame if it hadn’t been for the TeslaCam film. Based on the footage, the insurance company found the other driver at fault, which was certainly helpful since the Model S was totaled.

There are many other interesting clips in the video above, so be sure to check it out. As always, once you’ve had a chance to watch the video, scroll down and leave us a comment. Do you own a Tesla with TeslaCam? If not, do you have an aftermarket dashcam? Finally, do you think all cars should offer built-in dashcams?
