Volkswagen ID.3 GTX Dual-Motor Electric Hot Hatch Coming In 2023

It will debut with next year’s ID.3 facelift.

According to a new source, Volkswagen is planning a mid-lifecycle redesign for its popular ID.3 electric hatchback, but the facelift will include much more than cosmetic changes. VW is expected to offer the much-anticipated ID.3 GTX dual-motor, all-wheel-drive performance variant with next year’s facelift.

We don’t know when it will happen, but it might happen as soon as next year. The ID.3 was released in 2019, making it a four-year-old model at this point, making it likely that we will see it in 2023.

VW spokesperson Martin Hube was asked explicitly about the ID.3 GTX at the launch of the ID.5 (shown below) in Austria, according to AutoExpress. He stated

Of course the project is progressing. [For the] ID.3 facelift…we will get some very interesting details and of course, we are convinced that customer’s expectations for a bit more power, for all-wheel drive is there, and [the] customer’s wish is what we have to fulfil.

Volkswagen previously confirmed that the ID.3 GTX had received approval, but it never stated when the model will be added to the lineup. This isn’t a guarantee that it’ll arrive in 2023, but it’s consistent with previous reports (both concerning the makeover and the GTX variant).

The ID.3 was revised once before, in late 2021, with a larger 12-inch infotainment screen, improved materials, Alcantara trim in the highest models, and even backlighting for the volume slider, making it simpler to use at night.

We don’t know how VW will update the ID.3’s appearance, but it will most likely focus on the fascias, new wheel designs, and inside trim options. They apply enhancements that could only have arrived after years of keeping the car in the hands of the owners with substantial updates like this.

The powertrain and battery pack options may change as a result of the makeover. The top-of-the-line ID.3 GTX will be the first ID.3 to include all-wheel drive, thanks to a dual-motor configuration borrowed from the larger ID.4 and ID.5 crossovers. The GTX models of these have 299 horsepower and 339 pound-feet (460 Nm) of torque, and can accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.2 seconds; the lighter ID.3 GTX with the same powerplant will likely go below that. The GTX variants of these have 299 horsepower and 339 pound-feet (460 Nm) of torque, sprinting to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.2 seconds; the lighter ID.3 GTX with the same powertrain will probably dip below the six-second mark.
