Audi will also declare which team the brand will be lining up in 2026 by the end of this year.

Audi’s participation in Formula One is contingent on the new technical rules that will take effect in 2026. The emphasis is very much on electrification and advanced sustainable fuels.

Audi announced on Friday that it will begin competing in Formula One in the 2026 season. Audi has announced that it will enter the FIA Formula One World Championship with a specially developed power unit. This project will be based at Audi Sport’s Neuburg facility near Ingolstadt. The premium automaker also stated that a Formula 1 powertrain will be produced in Germany for the first time in more than a decade.

Audi stated that it is relying on its motorsport employees and is also in the process of recruiting highly specialised professionals to build a competent power unit for Formula 1. Audi Sport’s Competence Center Motorsport in Ingolstadt will develop the powertrain.

From the 2026 Formula 1 season, the powertrain setup will receive significant upgrades, including an electric motor, battery, control electronics, and a combustion engine, which will increase the electric power output compared to the current Formula 1 drive systems. Audi revealed in a press release that the electric motor will have a power output of 544 hp. The 1.6-liter turbo engines powered by advanced sustainable fuel are also required for the brand’s entry into the series.

According to Audi AG Chairman of the Board of Management Markus Duesmann, motorsport has always been in Audi’s DNA and the company is steadily, if not quickly, moving towards its sustainability goals, and with Formula 1 setting a target of becoming carbon-neutral, the time was right. “With the new rules in place, now is the time for us to get involved.” After all, both Formula One and Audi have clear sustainability goals,” Duesmann explained. Audi will also reveal which team it will field in 2026 by the end of this year.
