In the United States, police cars are either enormous SUVs or large sedans with hulking V8 engines. The New York Police Department, on the other hand, took a different approach with its most recent patrol car.
A Ford Mustang Mach-E was unveiled at the 2022 New York Auto Show as the newest addition to the NYPD’s patrol car lineup. According to the NYPD, this is part of the agency’s shift to a greener fleet, which began a few years ago with the delivery of hundreds of hybrid vehicles in 2020 and the conversion of a Tesla Model 3 into a police car last year.

The New York Police Department’s newest patrol car is a Ford Mustang Mach-E GT, which is powered by twin permanent magnet synchronous motors with 480 horsepower (358 kilowatts) and 634 pound-feet (860 Newton-meters) of immediate torque. It’s meant to travel up to 270 miles (435 kilometres) on pure electric power, though we believe the police car has a shorter range.
That’s because the NYPD’s Mustang Mach-E GT has ballistic door panels and window inserts on both front doors, in addition to the standard decals, sirens, and lights mounted on the electric crossover. The precise bulletproof requirements haven’t been revealed.

The Mustang Mach-E GT police car on exhibit at the 2022 New York Auto Show is just one of 100 that the NYPD will use. The electric patrol cars will begin patrolling the streets this summer, according to ABC News.
Governor Kathy Hochul of New York announced the installation of ten fast chargers at LaGuardia Airport. In less than 30 minutes, they should be able to charge compatible EVs.
The fast-charging stations are part of NYPA’s EVolve NY network, which plans to install 100 high-speed charging ports around the state.
