Beijing Auto Show Could Be Postponed Due To New COVID Outbreak

Nothing is official yet, though.

Over the last few weeks, the world has finally begun to recover from the spread of coronavirus, with practically all restrictions being lifted in many parts of the world. However, it is not all roses in China, as everyday instances are growing again, with the government reporting roughly 5,000 new cases today, as well as an increase in the number of asymptomatic illnesses. This downward trend is putting a pall on the next Beijing Auto Show, which is being rumoured to be postponed. (Tramadol)

The biennial event, which is one of China’s largest automotive industry events, is set to begin on April 21, but according to Automotive News, internal negotiations about a possible postponement are now underway. Early indications suggest that the international show may be pushed back to June this year, though the organisers have yet to confirm this.

One of the country’s two main auto shows is the Beijing Auto Show. Beijing and Shanghai alternate hosting the exhibition every year, with the most recent show taking place in September 2020. The 2020 edition of the event was originally scheduled for April of that year, but due to the spread of the coronavirus in the country at the time, it was postponed to the fall of that year. Now, it appears that the 2022 version will likely suffer the same fate.

Several local automakers debuted ideas and production vehicles at the Beijing Auto Show in 2020, including Qoros, Voyah, Neta, Hongqi, and many others. The next-generation BMW 7 Series with the all-electric i7 version, which was recently revealed to get a global launch at venues in Beijing, New York, and Munich, appears to be the show’s biggest debut. The show’s organisers have yet to make an official statement about the show’s 2022 edition. The Beijing Auto Show’s official website still includes an April 21 start date for the event, as well as a press accreditation form for journalists.
